When you find that it’s time to move to a new home, the first thing you often decide upon is how you’re going to get all of your stuff from one place to the other. Think about it, you find a moving company online, hire them to come over, pack everything up and they lift it all on the truck and drive it to your new home. You do none of that work. After all, you’ve got a million other things to worry about as you wrap out of your old place and settle into the new one.

That’s the primary reason why people will hire a moving company. They let a professional moving crew handle all of the specifics of securing your belongings and picking up all of those heavy appliances and furnishings. Piece of cake.

This option also the most efficient as you can be assured that the whole move will be finished in a day or two instead of piece-meal over a few weeks. You know you can rely on people who will show up instead of friends or family who manage to have something “come up” at the last minute.

In the end, the moving experience is, theoretically, less stressful than having to load all of your stuff into a moving truck or the backseats and trunk spaces of you and your friends cars and SUV’s over the course of a weekend or two. When it’s all said and done, the movers have brought it all over and placed it where you instruct in your new home.

Drawbacks

Notice the word “theoretically” up top. That’s because the biggest drawback is that you’re putting your things in the hands of total strangers who may not have the same cautious attention to detail as you. That takes some modicum of control out of your hands and you’re at the mercy of your movers.

You can reduce the likelihood of something bad happening by doing your research and selecting a reliable and reputable company.

There’s also the cost. Hiring professional movers is almost never cheap and the larger your home and the amount of belongings that need to be packed up, lifted out, put on the truck, driven (or shipped) to your new destination, and then off-loaded into your new home can get very expensive. Sure, there are ways to lower these costs, like packing your own stuff ahead of time, but it won’t slash the price that much.

Move Yourself


It’s all on your shoulders, literally and figuratively. You decide how it all gets packed up, the process by which it gets transported, and you’re the one lifting it all up and down off the truck. You or a friend of yours will also be driving that moving van or truck.

Just be sure to check your mirrors at all times!

Of course, the other major reason for doing the work yourself is to save you hundreds, possibly even thousands of dollars. In some cases, that’s not money saved as much as money not spent since some folks can’t afford to hire professional movers.

Drawbacks

Well, it’s all on your shoulders…literally and figuratively, just like it says above. You’re doing all that heavy lifting, you’re packing everything up, renting the truck, going to pick up the truck and dropping it off on time. If you’re late, you’re going to pay a late fee.

Not to mention all the variables that might pop up. Furniture won’t fit through a doorway, you accidentally make a hole in the wall trying to do it, and so on. Movers are insured, so their coverage will pay for that kind of damage. Your former landlord will expect you to pay if you’re the one who causes it as you’re leaving.

How to Become a Real Estate Agent in Ontario: 4 Things You Need to Know

Going into real estate has always been a good career option for some people. The flexible hours and boundless earning opportunities are especially attractive, especially if you have a knack for selling. However, unlike other sales positions in other industries, you can’t just start selling houses the moment you decided you want to become a real estate agent. Not a lot of people know this, but you have to qualify and get a license. The process is very specific, so a good deal of research would do you a lot of good too.

But before you head out and learn the steps in becoming a real estate agent in Ontario, you might want to know what to expect first before exerting some serious effort in the process. To help you, here are a few key points that can help you decide whether this field is right for you.

Do not expect that the process will be quick or easy.

The very first thing that you need to know if you want to work as a realtor is that the licensing process can be a challenge. You can’t expect to start selling houses in two months because that there are three parts in obtaining a license. It can take you a couple of years if you’re not going to fast track the procedure or try to be efficient in any way.

In the simplest of terms, here are the things you need to do to get a license:

  1. Sign up for classes with the Ontario Real Estate Association or OREA. There are five lessons that you can take to qualify for the second phase of the process. You need to pass all of the exams provided with the courses so you can be eligible to move to the next one.
  2. Work as a real estate salesperson for a registered brokerage.
  3. Apply to become a registered real estate salesperson to the Real Estate Council of Ontario or RECO.

  5. Apply to renew your real estate registration with RECO to fully become a real estate salesperson.

Some folks can complete all of these in a couple of months to a few years. It all depends on how you can fit all of the courses into your current schedule.

Be ready to invest.

Expect for your real estate to charge you fees – it’s a part of the process. This is why you should be ready to invest as these can cost a couple of thousand of dollars. At minimum, you’ll have to spend about $3,355 for all of the course and exam fees. You’ll also need to pay for a licensing fee of $350 on top of that.

Creating Your Very Own Home Library

Condos are traditionally small compared to houses, although you can find condos in NDG that can offer ample space. But if you are an avid reader and you live in a cramped condo unit, don’t fret. There are possible solutions.

Of course, we can easily solve this problem by just going with eBooks and an eBook reader. You can compile a collection of more than 10,000 books and not worry about where to put them all. Finding these eBooks isn’t even difficult online, and plenty of these books can be obtained for free.

But there’s something about the physical nature of a real book that appeals to a book lover. That’s why some condominium buildings feature their own library where their residents can unplug and enjoy a nice book. For book lovers, it’s a much better perk than having a gym or a sauna.

However, some people like us just want to have our own books inside our own home, even if that home is a tad small like a condo. It’s doable, and perhaps you should consider the following helpful tips:

  • Get a grand bookshelf. This means going for a huge bookshelf that goes from the floor to the ceiling and also wide enough to use up the whole span of a wall. Since you’re getting a bookshelf, you may as well use up every little space available by covering an entire wall with it. You may need to get a ladder to access the books in the upper levels, but this adds a bit of visual charm to your condo.
  • Use a bookshelf to divide sections of your condo. Often the dining space and the living space flow into each other, which makes sense. It keeps you from feeling claustrophobic and you can go from one spot to another easily enough. But some people like the idea of a section wall to divide the two spaces, and a bookshelf can work for this function very well. With two sides of the bookshelf filled with books and other types of reading material, you’ll have something to read whether you’re lounging on your couch or waiting for your coffee or your food in the kitchen.
  • If you’re using a room in your condo as your office, it makes sense if you go ahead and use it as you library room too. Place your books there so that it provides a nice work vibe to get you in the mood to work. When you need to take a break, you can just stay on the office couch and read for a few minutes to relieve your stress. If you do have clients drop by, having plenty of real books around you can also impress them.
  • Make sure you have ample lighting so you can see the titles easily. It helps to have the bookshelves on the opposite side of a window, so natural light can show you what books you have right away. You can also have plenty lamps around your reading areas and you can also raise the lamps by putting them on a stack of books.
  • It’s great if you think about reading when you buy your couch. It should be extremely comfy, and it should allow you to relax and lie back as you lose yourself to the pleasure of your book pages. Make sure the light is bright enough, as you can hurt your eyes when you read with insufficient light.
  • You should also have a small bookshelf right in your bedroom if you like to read right before you fall asleep. Pick a few of your favorites instead of new books, so that you won’t be tempted to stay up late to read the next chapter.

So who says a library is obsolete? Real books will always be a pleasure for those who prefer the smell of paper and leather bond volumes. It’s hard to explain to someone who isn’t a book lover, but to another book lover there’s no reason to explain either.
